In the violin family are the violin (soprano), viola (alto), cello (bass) and double bass. The violin is the smallest with the highest pitch; the viola is pitched a fifth below the violin; next is the cello that is an octave lower than viola, and the double bass is the largest and lowest of these four stringed instruments.
